We all love a gin and tonic but no more so than in Yorkshire reveals Victoria Fletcher, Hotel Manager at The New Ellington in Leeds.
Interest in gin has exploded and Yorkshire is now the second biggest contributor to the UK’s rising premium gin sales. Yorkshire alone sold a staggering 64,188 more litres than last year – equivalent to 800 bath tubs! Research by CGA Survey reveals that younger gin drinkers are most likely to pay more for a premium spirit which is sustaining the current boom in craft gin.
At The New Ellington we have over a 100 gins in stock at the bar which means our guests can experiment on variety and taste. There are lots of new Yorkshire gin makers and we serve all the Yorkshire favourites including Slingsby, Mason’s and Whittaker’s, each with their own garnish.
Meanwhile over at The Grand Hotel and Spa in York they serve the Hendrick’s Gin and Tonic Afternoon Tea which is strictly for adults only and perfect for gin lovers. Amusingly it is served in a special Hendrick’s tea pot and comes with the usual afternoon tea treats.
Making gin is more of an art than making vodka and the skill is in balancing the different flavours. Some gins have as few as three botanical flavours, while others can have more than 30. No two gins are the same and there is story behind each bottle which is what makes it so attractive to younger generation.
